Do I Need a UK Rep for My Safari Lodge? An Honest Checklist

By Graeme Watson  ·  22 June 2026  ·  6 min read

Not every African property needs a UK rep, and a good rep will tell you so. Representation is a real commitment of money and time, and it works for some properties far better than others. Here is an honest checklist to decide.

Representation probably makes sense if…

  • The UK is a priority market for you — British travellers are a high-value, long-haul safari audience, and you want a real share of it.
  • You can commit for two to three years. Meaningful UK operator relationships take 12 to 24 months to produce consistent bookings; single-season efforts rarely pay off.
  • You don’t have the UK-hours bandwidth to answer operators quickly, update product regularly, travel for trade shows and host FAM trips — on top of running the property.
  • You lack direct relationships with the UK product managers who decide which lodges go into a programme.
  • Your product suits the specialist UK consumer who books African travel through a tour operator rather than a budget OTA.

“The threshold is rarely about size. A well-positioned eight-tent camp can justify representation more easily than a large lodge selling on price — because the margin per booking funds the relationship work.”

It probably doesn’t (yet) if…

  • You want direct-to-consumer marketing or OTA management — that is a different discipline.
  • You can only commit to a single season or a one-off trade-show push.
  • Your product isn’t yet ready for the UK trade — pricing, availability and a clear story need to be in place first.
  • The UK simply isn’t a market you want to prioritise right now.

What to do first

Before you appoint anyone, get your trade basics in order: current trade pricing you can stand behind, reliable availability, a clear and specific product story, and good photography. Then read our guide to choosing a UK repping company and our note on what representation costs so you know what you are buying.

If you are unsure, talk to a specialist. A reputable rep — Kusa Connect included — will tell you honestly whether your property is ready and whether they are the right fit, rather than signing you for the sake of it.
