UK representation for African lodges

Looking for a UK rep for your safari lodge?

Kusa Connect is a UK-based travel trade representation company for African safari lodges, luxury hotels and DMCs in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. It works as a lodge’s sales office in the UK — meeting the tour operators and travel agents who sell Africa, training their consultants, planning FAM trips and representing the property at trade shows. The first step is an introductory conversation with the founder, Graeme Watson.

How UK representation works for an African lodge

A UK rep works on the people who decide which lodges British travellers are offered.

Much of the UK’s safari business is sold through the travel trade. A traveller books with a travel agent or a tour operator; the operator builds the itinerary and usually contracts the ground arrangements through a DMC in the destination; the lodge hosts the guest. Inside each operator, a product manager decides which lodges go into the programme, and the consultants decide which of those they recommend. A UK representative works on those two groups, in the UK, on the lodge’s behalf.

It is business-to-business work. The rep does not take consumer bookings — those run through the contracted operator — and it does not replace your reservations team or your DMC partners. Its job is to make sure the people choosing and selling African product in the UK know the lodge, understand what sets it apart and can sell it with confidence. For the fuller picture of the role, see hotel and lodge representation in the UK.

What Kusa Connect does for a lodge

Steady, relationship-led work, run by the founder rather than handed to a junior account manager.

  • Operator meetings and account management — with the product managers at UK tour operators who programme Africa. Trade meetings and training.
  • Agent and consultant training — so the people taking the enquiry can describe the lodge accurately and match it to the right client.
  • FAM trips — agreeing who should visit, planning the itinerary with you and your DMC partners, and following up afterwards. FAM trip planning.
  • Trade shows and events — Kusa Connect can represent the lodge at WTM London, Experience Africa, Africa’s Travel Indaba and other trade events, with meetings booked in advance. Trade shows and events.
  • Brand awareness, PR and digital — trade newsletters, social and media work aimed at UK buyers. Brand awareness and PR.
  • Market intelligence — which operators programme your area, how comparable lodges are positioned, and what the UK trade is asking for. UK market analysis.
  • Reporting — regular updates on who was met, what was discussed and what happens next.

Kusa Connect keeps a deliberately small portfolio so each property gets real attention, and discusses any overlap with existing clients before taking a new one on. You can see the properties it represents today in the portfolio.

Who it suits

Kusa Connect is a specialist, and says so.

It suits safari lodges, tented camps, boutique and luxury hotels and DMCs in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa that want a senior, dedicated presence in the UK trade. Properties in neighbouring African destinations are considered case by case where there is UK trade demand.

It is not the right fit for a property that wants consumer bookings, a sales presence in the United States, or one agency covering many continents — a tour operator, a US-based representative or a larger generalist rep will serve those better. The UK is the core market; the Irish trade is covered selectively, as the UK and Ireland representation page explains. If you are still deciding whether a UK rep makes sense at all, this checklist is the place to start.

How to start

A short, practical sequence. Nothing is signed until both sides are sure of the fit.

  1. Send an introduction. The property and where it is, your current UK business, and which tour operators or DMCs already sell you — through the contact page or to gw@kusaconnect.com.
  2. Have an introductory conversation. What you want from the UK market, what you have tried already, and whether there is any overlap with properties Kusa Connect already represents.
  3. Agree the scope and fee. The year’s activity is agreed in writing, on a fixed retainer set up front and scoped to the property, with no commission.
  4. Get trade-ready. Trade rates and contracting terms for operators, a fact sheet, current imagery and the DMC partners you work with — shaped for the UK trade before the first meetings.
  5. Start the meetings and training. Introductions to the UK operators whose programmes suit the lodge, training for their consultants, and a plan for FAM trips and trade shows across the year.

UK trade relationships take time to turn into bookings, and a straight answer on timing matters more than a promise. How long until a UK rep drives bookings sets out what to expect, and how UK rep companies charge explains the fee models side by side.
