What Does a Repping Company Actually Do? A Lodge Owner’s Guide

By Graeme Watson  ·  18 June 2026  ·  7 min read

“Repping company” is one of those phrases the travel trade uses constantly and rarely defines. If you run an African safari lodge, a camp, a hotel or a DMC, and someone has suggested you need a UK repping company, this is what they actually mean — and what the job actually involves.

First, the disambiguation that matters. A repping company is not a holiday rep — the person who meets package guests in resort. A repping company — more formally a travel-trade representation company — works in the source market, here the UK, selling and marketing your property to the tour operators and travel agents who put it in front of British travellers. It is a business-to-business sales role, done on your behalf, thousands of miles from where you operate.

The job, day to day

Representation is relationship work, and most of it is unglamorous and continuous. A UK repping company acts as your in-market sales and marketing office. In practice that means:

  • Account-managing tour operators and agents — staying in front of the product managers who decide which lodges go into a programme, with current information and a reason to list you.
  • Winning brochure and programme inclusion — the practical goal of all the relationship work.
  • Arranging and hosting FAM trips — getting the right consultants to experience your property first-hand, because nothing sells a lodge like a consultant who has slept there.
  • Delivering trade training — teaching agency teams how to sell your property accurately and confidently.
  • Representing you at trade shows such as WTM London, with pre-booked meetings rather than speculative ones.
  • Being your UK-hours voice — answering the operator query at 9pm your time that would otherwise wait until morning.
  • Reporting back — what was discussed, what was listed, what the market is asking for.

“The work is not a single pitch. It is showing up, in the right rooms, month after month, so that when a client mentions your destination, your property is the one the consultant already knows.”

What it is not

A repping company is not a tour operator — it does not package and sell trips to the public. It is not purely a PR agency — press coverage is one channel within the work, not the whole of it. And it is not a booking channel — bookings still flow through the operators and agents; the rep’s job is to make sure those operators choose and sell you.

Specialist or generalist?

Some repping companies are generalists representing hotels worldwide; others specialise in a region or product. For a relationship-led product like an African safari lodge, a specialist who already builds Africa programmes with the relevant UK operators usually delivers more than a generalist for whom your property is one of hundreds. We go deeper into the trade-offs, and how to choose, in our guide to UK repping companies for African travel.

Kusa Connect is the specialist end of that spectrum: a boutique, founder-led UK repping company that works only with African suppliers across Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, and is an ATTA member.
